Today I was messing around with a little riff / chord sequence on my Tele and had an idea in my mind of how I wanted it to sound.a bit Graham Coxon.I worked through them until I realised I wanted a 6V6 clean but a EL84 every now and the for the beef and sleeze when I'd dig in. I find myself having to vary my playing to suit the power amp, to feel my way around them. I now understand why people say if you're using dirt pedals then you don't like the tone of your amp(s).Įach tube type sounds and reacts differently. It just makes sense to me and I can get most of what I want just out of the amp without any dirt pedals. I MUCH prefer the Nextone layout of two foot switchable channels, with a tone and boost available in each. I was kind of able to get that but I'm not one for presets and tinkering. This amp achieves what I had hoped the Katana 100 would : allow me to get decent and varied levels of clean and gain using just the amp and the ga-fc foot controller. To them I say, play what makes you happy.

I know that other people will have a very different, possibly negative, maybe disappointing experience, and they will decry my description and cry foul. After spending some time with it I find it inspiring and fun and I'm really really glad I bought it. I find it has that liveliness, that slight unpredictability, that I've liked in some tube amps. It feels like some tube amps I've owned and played. I'm sure I'm not alone in having played amps that sounded pretty much the same regardless of what was plugged in : producing sounds akin to triggered recordings, not the result of decent instrument / amp interaction.Īnd that's the fundamental attraction of this amp - it reacts, it interacts, it responds, it complains, it fights - it's playable and pliant, slippery and delicate, sensitive yet capable of a mighty roar. This seems like a low bar but I love how each of my guitars sounds distinct and interacts uniquely with each Tube type and channel.

I've now spent a fair number of hours playing the Nextone Stage, enjoying it, discovering how to drive it & bend it to my will.
